sitemap.xml and robots.txt checker

The sitemap tells Google which pages to crawl. The check opens URLs from it and shows broken, redirected and blocked pages.

What a good sitemap looks like

sitemap.xml lists only working URLs that return 200 and match their canonical, with lastmod dates. robots.txt points to it with a Sitemap line. Deleted pages and old redirected URLs are removed, or the crawler wastes time.

Frequently asked questions

Where should the sitemap live?

Usually at the root: /sitemap.xml. If elsewhere, declare it in robots.txt and Google Search Console.

How many URLs per sitemap?

Up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB. More than that: split into several and list them in a sitemap index.

Does a small site need a sitemap?

Not strictly, but it speeds up indexing of new pages. A shop with a catalogue always needs one.
