Questions and answers

What is llms.txt?

A plain Markdown text file in the site root: a name, one sentence about the site and a list of key pages with short notes. The format is described at llmstxt.org. Not every AI reads it, but it breaks nothing and takes five minutes.

Do I need llms.txt to be shown in ChatGPT and Perplexity?

No, and it guarantees nothing. What matters most: do not block AI search bots in robots.txt, serve text in the HTML and say clearly who you are and what you do. llms.txt is a supplement to that.

Which pages should I list?

The 5 to 15 most important ones: what you sell or write about, prices and terms, contacts, key articles. Put the rest in the Optional section.

How is llms.txt different from robots.txt and sitemap.xml?

robots.txt tells crawlers where they may go. sitemap.xml lists every page for search engines. llms.txt is a short explanation of what the site is about, written for language models.

Where do I put the file?

In the site root, so it opens at your-site/llms.txt with a 200 response as plain text (text/plain or text/markdown).

How do I check it works?

Run your site through Awe Check: the llms.txt item shows whether the file is found, and neighbouring items check AI crawler access and markup.

Check how AI sees your site

Awe Check tests AI crawler access, text without JavaScript, llms.txt and markup in a minute, plus laws and security.
