Product page SEO: how to fill a product page so it ranks above competitors
Name, specs, description, photos, FAQs and product markup: what to fill in a product page, with a before and after from a real store.
Checked against sources: 16 October 2026

- 60 of 60store pages without reviews in markup
- 150characters: Google Merchant title limit
- 3 photosminimum: front, back, product
Why a competitor ranks higher with the same product
Google and marketplaces do not compare price; they compare how fully a page answers the shopper. More verifiable facts, a clear name and reviews in markup win, even for the same product.
We audited 60 product pages of a live garden store. The average score was 83 of 100, and the biggest losses repeated almost everywhere: no reviews and shipping in markup on all 60, missing key specs on 49, short descriptions on 46. One template fix closes such a gap across the whole catalog.
Name: what it is, model, pack size
Main word first, then variety or model, pack size last. Keep brand, price and “buy” out of the name: the brand is already in specs and markup, and Google Merchant rejects price and promotional text in titles.
- Good: Lojain F1 Tomato 1000 seeds
- Bad: LOJAIN TOMATO BUY CHEAP
- Bad: High quality Enza Zaden seeds (what product is it?)
Specs: the ones people filter by
Look at marketplace filters in your category: that is the list shoppers narrow choices by. For seeds: days to maturity, fruit weight, plant type, field or greenhouse, disease resistance.
Numbers in the copy must match the table. If specs say 70-75 days and the text says 80-85, the shopper sees two truths and trusts neither.
Description: the short answer first, then details
- First 2-3 sentences: who it is for and why it helps. AI answers and Google quote this part.
- Then sections with subheadings: features, how to grow or use, what is in the pack.
- Your own words, not the manufacturer’s text: Google shows one of identical descriptions and pushes the rest down.
- No stock phrases and no “best price” claims you cannot prove.
Photos, FAQs and reviews
- At least three photos: pack front, pack back with contents, the product itself. Write alt text the way people search.
- Three to five of your own FAQs: pack size, greenhouse or field, shelf life.
- Ask for a review after delivery and mark up the rating: stars stand out in results.
Product markup: so Google shows price and availability
Product markup in JSON-LD tells Google the price, currency, availability, brand, GTIN, rating and return policy. Without it the page is a plain link in results. Make sure the JSON is valid: Google skips a broken block entirely.

Before: name “Lojain F1 tomato Lojain F1”, no specs at all, “best price in Kazakhstan” in the search snippet, stock phrases, and the word “tomato” repeated so often the keyword density index was 4.5 over 827 words.
After: “Lojain F1 Tomato 1000 seeds”; a six-row spec table from the manufacturer; an opening paragraph on who it is for; growing and storage sections; four own FAQs; no unprovable claims. Density index 2.65, like good copy.
How to check your page
The Awe Check product page audit shows all of this point by point and compares it with competitor pages: what is missing, where they are stronger and what to fix first. A whole catalog is audited from the sitemap, with a fix queue you can export.
Frequently asked
How many words should a product description have?
Google sets no number. A guide: 150+ words of your own copy for products chosen by specs, and more than the competitor ranking above you.
Can I use the manufacturer’s description?
As a source of facts, not word for word: Google shows one of identical texts. Rewrite it and add what the manufacturer does not have.
How do I compare my page with a competitor?
Paste your link and up to three competitor links into Awe Check. Marketplace pages are audited through the Awe Check browser extension.
