Website not loading: what an owner should do and how to find the cause

A site will not open for you or your customers: certificate, DNS, hosting, a block. How to find where it broke in a minute and check it online.

The short answer

When a site will not open, the fault is in one of three places: on your side (cache, connection, VPN), on the site’s side (hosting, certificate, DNS) or in between (a block by country or address). First find out whether it fails only for you or for everyone, because that decides whether to fix the site or your connection. Awe Check looks at the site from a neutral server, like an outside visitor.

First: you or everyone

  • Open the site on your phone over mobile data, not your wifi.
  • Open it in an incognito window to rule out cache and extensions.
  • Ask someone in another city, or check the site through a neutral service.

If it fails for everyone: 5 common causes

  • The SSL certificate expired: the browser says “connection not private”. Fix with renewal and auto-renewal.
  • The domain lapsed or DNS broke: “server not found”. Check the expiry at your registrar.
  • Hosting went down or the plan ran out: a 5xx or silence. Open the hosting panel and logs.
  • The site is blocked by country or address, for example by a protection layer on the server itself. Review firewall rules.
  • An error after a plugin or config update: a white screen or 500. Roll back the last change.

If it fails only for you

Clear the cache, turn off the VPN and extensions, switch DNS to a public one. If a site “will not open even with a VPN”, it is almost always the site, not your network. A “connection not private” message on a single computer often means the wrong date and time on that device.

How to stop hearing about it from customers

Run an Awe Check scan once a month: it warns about an expiring certificate in the report instead of after the site went down. It also shows the server response, speed and protection.

Frequently asked

What should I do when a website does not open?

Check whether it opens for others, try incognito on mobile data, then look at the certificate, domain and hosting. If everyone gets an error, the fix is on the site’s side.

How do I check whether a site is up right now?

Enter the address in Awe Check: it opens the site from a neutral server and shows the response, certificate and speed. If the service got through and you did not, it is your network.

Why does a site not open without a VPN?

Most likely access is restricted at the provider or country level. Check whether the address is blocked in your region and whether the server limits by country.

Why does it say “connection not private”?

Three common causes: the certificate expired, it was issued for another name, or the device has the wrong date and time.
